Shock, Gasp, a Pastor Lied

Mr Guglielmucci, who was a pastor with one of Australia’s biggest youth churches, Planetshakers, preached to thousands about his terminal illness and tugged at hearts with a hit song.

The problem is the pastor wasn’t dying at all.

  1. I’m reminded of an occasion a few years ago, when I was working in a bookshop with a colleague who had terminal ovarian cancer. Christine (not her real name) was a sweet girl with a passion for children’s books, who always put a brave face on her illness, even when the chemotherapy left her sicker than a dog with Ebola.

Eventually, the sad news came – our manager announced at a Tuesday morning staff meeting that Christine had died. The shop was in mourning. We held a collection, we made plans to attend the funeral, we consoled one another with, “Well, at least she’s at peace now…” Her favourite author set up a special memorial award in her honour, and the kids she’d worked with in the childern’s book group were distraught.

On Thursday, another member of staff bumped into Christine, who was working behind the counter in McDonald’s, in a town not ten miles from the bookshop. She had never had cancer, it turned out – the whole story was an elaborate sympathy-gathering charade. Needless to say, we didn’t send any flowers.

Why do people pull this shit? Apart from anything else, it’s unbelievably selfish – how cruel do you have to be to let your friends and loved ones think you’re going to die?

  2. It also occurs to me – the man missed a huge trick. Surely, “Jesus made my death-cancer go away,” would be a miracle story worthy of the New Testament itself?

  3. Welcome yunshui, an interesting but disturbing story. You are right it’s quite selfish and cruel to let people think you are dying, but then some people will come up with all sorts of BS to get away from something in their lives.

I thought the same thing, I wondered why he hadn’t tried to pull the “it’s a miracle” trick?

Brucere snap – see today’s post.

I saw your comment on FriendlyA..
    Good on’ya Mate’..

Its a shocker of a story but for people who know a bit about the internal workings of the religious crowd ..particularly the “bells and whistles’ kind of xian – its not surprising at all. Fucking typical imo.

Horrible betrayal and exploitation of people’s misery!!!

  7. I heard about that incident. it was truly a sad day when that happened. I am wondering why he felt he needed to do that. Was he in need of some attention? compassion? support? Was he not feeling the support of other christians around him? Was it a cry for help? Who knows. It’s just a sad thing.
