Sect Leader on Rape Accomplice Charges

as reported in The Herald newspaper Sat 15 Sep:

Warren Jeffs, head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a breakaway Mormon clan (I didn’t know the mormons had breakaway clans, and its a bit scary that even mormons have gone fundie) has been charged as an accomplice to rape after arranging the marriage between a 14 year old girl and her 19 year old cousin.

He had told the girl that “it was her religious duty to give herself ‘mind, body and soul’ to her husband”

Surprisingly Jeffs isn’t also being charged with polygamy.

Not surprisingly, it is expected his defence lawyers are going to argue he is being persecuted for his religious beliefs.

  1. As reported in the smh
Jeffs was found guilty, and as predicted his defence lawyers had argued that Jeffs was being persecuted for his religion.
No, he was persecuted because he used his position of power in a religious organisation to assist in the rape of some poor unfortunate girl.
